Opportunity:
One of the first things I noticed when I got to the University of Florida is that the city of Gainesville is filled with a multitude of very diverse places to eat. These people love their food and understand that college students are more likely to eat out or buy meals because its faster and easier than cooking their own meals. It didn't take long for my entrepreneurial mind to start working, I knew there was a market and I just couldn't think of something that could be new, exciting, and that actually could be successful. During my second year of college an idea came to me. I realized what need wasn't being met. I finally understood where I need to focus my thinking on. There was no accessible late night healthy food option. Where could college students get their late night cravings met by a healthy food option? There weren't any. Pizza, burger, wings, etc. That's what their options were. So I saw the potential in the healthy food crazed Millenials at UF. This trend towards being more aware of what you're putting inside your body is taking over the world, and many more people are starting to see the benefits. The group more attracted to this trend are the young people, the aspiring Millenials. As of right now, the only way on-campus students satisfy their late night cravings are through ordering delivery pizza, or from one of the delivery companies. The price of a meal, plus the delivery charge, plus the tip for the driver can get costly, which is why sometimes students opt out of satisfying their needs. I see this as a big opportunity to create something that students will get excited about and will be willing to try and if satisfied will continue to eat. I see this window of opportunity being open for as long as there is no one that comes up with this idea, and I can't imagine that it would take for someone with the resources at hand to realize.
Innovation:
Having said that, I want to discuss what my innovation is. My plan is to get 3 food trucks and out of them sell healthy meals and snacks that students can buy from 9 pm to 3 am. The way it will work is that, using a mobile app, students will request a food truck. They cannot request their food truck to come just to them, instead they call it to the nearest food truck hub (my plan is to designate various locations around campus, and the more popular off campus areas) where the food trucks will park for a certain amount of time and sell food). The person could be lucky and have a food truck hub right in front of their dorm or apartment complex but if not, then it will be a short walk away. The more people that request a food truck to a certain location the quicker it will come. My plan is to create a menu that will, ideally, only contain meals strictly under $8, along with small snacks for $1-$2 and bottled drinks. Since I am not a food expert, I plan on hiring a chef to help me create a menu. Aside from making it primarily available to college students, during lunch hours 11 am to 2 pm I will have the food truck go to various business complexes in the area so we could cater to a different demographic.
Venture Concept:
My innovation will address the need for late night cheap healthy food option for students on campus and it will also give people a cheap healthy option for their lunch hour while at work. It will cater to them great food at a low price and with the comfort of not having to go far or pay for a delivery. I think costumers will buy into my business because it will make them feel less bad about themselves for getting hungry late and eating something that is damaging to their health. I imagine that it will be difficult at first, and that it will take a lot of marketing and publicity to kick start the business, but I feel that in due time it will gain a following. My main competitors are all the food options in the area, and the companies that specialize in just delivery. A possible weakness of this idea is the university. It will take many permits and I will probably have to jump through lots of hoops to get it approved by the university and to get their permission to sell my food on campus. Once I get past those difficulties, my main objective will be to create a following and to keep my customers happy. The way I will keep them happy is by keeping my employees happy, and ensuring that they give customers the best possible experience. I hope that as my business grows I will in turn have more food trucks at my disposal and definitely expand to other college towns in Florida.
Minor Elements:
I think what I will have that will allow me to separate myself from my competitors and will make it difficult for them to copy my eventual success is that I understand the mind of the broke college student. Not only that, but I understand that cheap food is not their only concern, and that it is important to eat healthy food as well.
For my next venture after the food trucks, I wish to imitate what I want to do at UF and do it at FSU or UCF. This will expand my business and through word of mouth create an instant interest in my business at each of those schools.
If my business is successful, and there's potential buyers in 5-10 years then I will most likely sell my business in order to move on to something I am more passionate about than food.
Changes:
I didn't change this venture concept much from the original, but this is a list of changes and additions:
-I decided to not just limit my business to on-campus students but to also make it accessible to off campus students by place food truck hubs in various popular areas.
-Changed my max meal price from $6 to $8, because after some thought, and advice from fellow classmates, I realized that my prices were too low. Considering all the materials and food I have to buy, making a profit may have been extremely difficult, if not impossible.
- I also changed my late night hours of operation from 8 pm-3 am to 9pm-3 am. The reason for this change is because I feel that 8 pm is still a bit early for some people and they may choose to go to a restaurant instead.
-I added my lunch option in order to cater to a different demographic.
Hey, Gabriel! I really like this venture concept and think it is an excellent idea. I know how excited students and locals get for the Friday food truck rally that happens here in gville once a month. The place is always packed. I guess there is just something about the natural element and outdoor environement of food truck services and getting together to socialize. Students may be drawn to the idea of walking a short distance with friends for a late night study break rather than calling for delivery. Good luck! here is my post: http://analeisent3003.blogspot.com/2016/04/week-15-venture-concept-no-2.html
ReplyDeleteHello Gabe. How are you? I think you have done a pretty good job this semester, but in all honesty it seems like you can do just a litttttttle better in certain situations. I don't mean that in a bad way, because I LOVE this post, but I mean like going the extra mile so you don't end up just missing something you need. You know that feeling being "one off" the target you need. This post, however, shows to me that you have gone the extra mile. The minor elements and changes were added in such detail that really shows you care and have learned a lot throughout this experience. This journey was not easy and I'm glad you made it out on top! Great job Gabe! I can't give you a link to my post because I actually didn't get to doing this assignment. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteHello Gabriel,
ReplyDeleteYou have a great base idea, but I still think that it needs some tweaking. I am glad that you limited your hours a bit, since most restaurants are still open ‘til 9 or 10 PM. I do not know how I feel about a food truck (like how big will it be, cost-efficiency). I really like that you want to help people, especially students, eat healthier, but I think some other potential customers could benefit, too. I think you have some more work and thinking to do about your potential market, I think you might be missing a lot of people.
Our venture concepts are not alike, except that we both are targeting the college age grouping. Here is the link to my blog post, if you would like to check it out: http://kwallaceent.blogspot.com/2016/04/venture-concept-no-2-sharespace-hostels.html
Good idea!

Hi Gabriel,
ReplyDeleteI think you have a great idea here! Similar to your venture, I had made changes with my business to be more inclusive of my demographic. I may not live on campus, but if I did, I would definitely be a customer. I don't know if it is just how I feel, but there is something about a food truck that makes it fun to eat at. Maybe its because I don't see them often, except for in movies. either way, I think students will like the food truck concept; also, it is great that you are addressing healthy options for food. I like burgers here and there, but noting beats a healthy stir-fry. I think you should expand your hours a little more for lunch and possible park in the Plaza of Americas (alternate with Krishna); it gets a lot of traffic and increases the demographic to students who do not live on campus. If you get a chance, please check out my venture concept at http://innovationnation101.blogspot.com/2016/04/venture-concept-no-2.html.
Gabriel,
ReplyDeleteAs a foodie, I love this idea. One of my favorite days of the year is the day when there is a food truck festival in downtown Gainesville! I like the inclusion of a lunch option, too. I think having a late night food option would appeal to a lot of people, especially in college as people start to watch their weight after gaining the freshman 15. Great job, I think this idea is really efficient and implementable. You can check out my second venture concept here: http://taylertibbits.blogspot.com/2016/04/venture-concept-no-2.html
